World champion Sebastian Vettel made history by winning India’s first ever Formula One Grand Prix with ease on Sunday, as McLaren’s Jenson Button tightened his grip on the championship’s second place.
Red Bull’s Vettel led throughout for his 11th victory of the season, finishing some 8.4 seconds ahead of Button with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso third and Australian Mark Webber fourth.
Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher battled to fifth but McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton came in seventh after yet another collision with his Ferrari bete noire, Felipe Massa.
“My pace was good up until the crash. After the crash, we struggled,” said the 2008 champion.
India’s debut grand prix got off to a furious start when Rubens Barrichello was hit on the first turn and three cars ended up off-track, before Jarno Trulli found himself on grass.
Vettel made no mistake from pole position but Button nipped past Webber and Alonso to go from fourth on the grid to second, cueing up an early dogfight with the Australian Red Bull driver.
Toro Rosso looked set to get both cars in the points until Sebastien Buemi stopped with smoke pouring from his machine. Jaime Alguersuari went on to take eighth, ahead of Adrian Sutil in the leading Force India, and Sergio Perez, as the Sauber man proved the most successful of those who ran ultra-short opening stints on hard tyres then switched to softs for the duration.
Perez narrowly beat Renault’s Vitaly Petrov, who followed the same strategy. Bruno Senna challenged for points in the second Renault but was hampered by KERS issues and finished 12th, followed by Paul di Resta (Force India).
The Buddh layout proved tricky for the field to safely navigate as one on the first lap. First a brush between the two Williams sent Rubens Barrichello into Kamui Kobayashi’s Sauber, which then rejoined in the path of Timo Glock’s Virgin. Among several other brushes of wheels around the lap, Jarno Trulli was left with a puncture after his Lotus was punted into a spin by an HRT. Yahoo! Eurosport UK
Heikki Kovalainen ran as high as 10th during all the pit stops but had to be content with 14th for Lotus, well ahead of Rubens Barrichello who had to fight back from a start-line collision with Williams team mate Pastor Maldonado, then first-corner clashes with Virgin’s Timo Glock and Sauber’s Kamui Koboyashi. The latter was out there and then, Glock made it back to the pits before retiring and Maldonado later stopped with mechanical woes.
Jerome D’Ambrosio was 16th for Virgin ahead of HRT’s Narain Karthikeyan, who had a race-long duel with team mate Daniel Ricciardo, who was closing fast at the end before having to make a late tyre stop. They were 17th and 18th ahead of Lotus’s Jarno Trulli, who was spun by one of them on the opening lap and was never able to make up lost ground after a long pit stop.
Vettel’s dominant win brings the world champion’s points tally to 374 from Button on 240, Alonso on 227, Webber on 221 and Hamilton on 202. In the constructors’ stakes, Red Bull have 595 points to McLaren’s 442 and Ferrari’s 325, which means the British team have secured second place in the standings ahead of the Italians. Further back, Force India hang on to sixth place with 51 points, but Sauber and Toro Rosso are now equal on 41
